A plan to develop the eastern creative urban area has been in motion since the beginning the year, connecting the three districts to create an ecosystem.

Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City’s Municipal Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan has asked the city to tighten control on the zoning of the eastern creative urban area to prevent spontaneous construction and make a separate plan to develop Districts 2, 9 and Thu Duc.

At the 18th meeting of the tenth HCMC Party’s Executive Committee, Secretary Nguyen Thien Nhan also mentioned a plan to create a central area to serve as a nucleus of the city’s fourth industrial revolution.

This urban area is formed by connecting District 9 (home to a high-tech park), District 2 (home to a new urban area and a financial center in the future) and Thu Duc District (home to 12 universities with over 7,000 students under the Vietnam National University in HCMC).

Currently, the eastern part of HCMC, including Districts 2 and 9 and Thu Duc District covering 211.73 sq.k, contains nearly 1 million people, a developed transport infrastructure (adjacent to Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay high-way), and many projects for housing in combination with shopping centers. This helps create a special advantage for the city’s eastern area, a focus of the property market.

The area will also be a destination for high-end service sector (finance-credit) as it is home to Thu Thiem new urban area; high-tech industrial parks (namely Linh Xuan and Linh Trung processing zones); Rach Chiec Sport Complex (for sports of the 31st SEA Games to be organized in 2021); university and start-up urban area (with the Vietnam National University being the nucleus); Suoi Tien recreational park; and the last stop of the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro route in Tan Phu ward, District 9. All create favourable conditions and important foundations for future synchronous development.

Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan said to deal with the city’s shortcomings during urban development, managers and scientists should review the master plan with a close attachment to transport planning and regional connectivity.

There should be a regional cooperation mechanism to help the regions develop faster and generate higher income to reduce pressure from overpopulation in the city, he said, adding that Ho Chi Minh City should transfer technology application to other areas.

As for industry and service, the city needs to select skillful workers, according to Nhan.
