Vam Cong bridge open to traffic in Mekong Delta region

Yesterday, Vam Cong bridge spanning the Hau river to connect Can Tho city and Dong Thap province in the Mekong Delta was open to traffic at an inauguration ceremony co-organized by authorities of the two localities.

Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The, current and former leaders of 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region, and many local residents attended the ceremony.

Kicked off in September 2013, the cable stayed bridge, with a length of 2.97 kilometers, connect Can Tho’s Thot Not district and Dong Thap’s Lap Vo district.

Vam Cong bridge has six lanes with the permissible speed of 80 kilometers per hour. Its construction was funded by Official Development Assistance (ODA) funds of South Korea and the Vietnamese Government’s counterpart capital. Total investment of the project is VND5.687 trillion ($243.61 million).

Speaking at the event, Minister The stressed that the Vam Cong bridge plays a significantly important role in connecting traffic infrastructure in the Mekong Delta region, facilitating travel of local residents as well as cargo transport.

It is part of the traffic route across Dong Thap Muoi area connecting with Ho Chi Minh City through Long An, Dong Thap and Kien Giang province to create a link in Ho Chi Minh Highway, contributing in investment attraction and bring development motive power for the Mekong Delta region.
