The city government must be resolute in not licensing new housing projects in the downtown area and seriously abide by the 930-hectare downtown plan to ease traffic congestion, Vo Van Hoan, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Office Chief said at a recent press conference.

Mr. Hoan pointed out that if the city government bans developing housing projects in the current downtown area which covers 930 hectares, property investors will flee to other places rather than flocking to the area in the next 3-5 years.

Also at the conference, Tran Quang Lam, Deputy Director of the Department of Transport revealed that his department is building a project on private vehicle limitation and public transport intensification.

Reportedly, the project would be carried out when there are necessary and sufficient conditions. Public transport system must be developed for local residents to easily access to the system before the city government limits private vehicles.
