Attending the opening ceremony of Cu Mong tunnel, Le Dinh Tho, Deputy Minister of Transport, said the tunnel was the country’s key construction work that implemented under the form of Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT).
Earlier, the ministry had also built tunnels Ca and Co Ma in the central provinces of Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa under BOT form.
Cu Mong tunnel is the Vietnam’s third-longest underground passageway, after the 6.3-kilometer Hai Van tunnel, connecting the central province of Thua Thien – Hue and Da Nang City, and the 4.1-kilometer Deo Ca tunnel, connecting Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa.
Work on the tunnel was kicked off in September 2015, with total cost of VND4 trillion ($172.4 million). Cu Mong tunnel pair includes two underground roads with each two-lane road having the maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour for both carriageways.
